The Importance of Listening:
There are no Experts

Stephen R. Covey said "Listen, then speak" -
- if both sides succeeded in doing that,
then there would be no communication at all.

No one knows everything. That's why it's important to listen to what people have to say. Be careful when dealing with experts; they may be closed-minded about potential learning experiences and no one knows you or your business like you do. It's a client's responsibility to accurately and completely describe their problem or needs, or to ask questions of their consultant.

However, listening goes both ways. You want the people you hire to listen to you, but you are hiring them because they have valuable insight into a field in which you are lacking knowledge. There needs to be an exchange in communication. It is the consultant's responsibility to be forward about challenges, problems, or requesting necessary information that the client has not provided and a client's responsibility to listen to questions and provide information.

Listening and speaking need to be in a balance or communication will not take place.

In forming opinions about people, it is important not only to listen to what people tell you, but to the underlying messages that convey what they feel.
