Sovereign Nation of Kerri

by the Crisses

Eons passed and history moved on with the doings and comings and goings of great people and heroes, rulers and the ruled, laws and the constant manipulations and movements which make society. The Sidhe elves visited the mortal realm and shaped a thing here and there, regarded with great awe. They were tall and comely creatures of substance and gossamer and glitter, the mortal elves were shorter and like earth and grass glades and rich fields. The difference between a rainbow hued dragonfly and a shrew. The world of faerie lost its hold on these mortal elves. And the Sidhe lived for what seemed like forever.

Humans encroached on the world of nature, as is their wont. The mortal elves, so closely tied to the earth, retreated further and further, and as their domain shrank so did their numbers before humankind. Human populations grew, and as they grew they grew apart from the elves, where once they had lived in harmony and mingled cultures and dreams. In sadness, the longer-lived mortal elves carved out a safe home, and named it just as they named their world, Kerri meaning Heart. The humans let the elves have their small country without complaint, and some still followed the old ways, keeping their love of their earthy brethren, and moved close to the country that harbored them.

The elves decided to give their country a ruler who was of the Sidhe elves, because they were closer to Faerie and had powers that would help protect the little country. Kerri nestled in a range of mountains in which dwarves lived, and its people worked out a relationship with their neighbors. Through Sidhe world shaping magics, pathways into Kerri were limited. One would have a difficult time finding the slender mountain passes protected by Sidhe magicks.

The Sidhe brought the Between closer to Kerri but drew it farther from the rest of the world, and the soil became more rich and the native elves grew comfortable with their lot as farmers and tanners. Sometimes Sidhe creatures would pass unwittingly into the mortal world and be spotted with their larger more liquid knowing eyes staring at an elven stronghold and elves would recognize that these Sidhe cousins of the mortal animals were more innocent -- and more aware -- than their brethren, and would not hunt them.
