This was approximately the time that Xaron returned to the world, and tried to get into Kerri. Drendel's Sidhe counsel blocked it to the entity that performed the Unmaking, sealing it off from him. Frustrated because he couldn't find a way into Kerri, Xaron decided to raise an army to fight their way in. While the way was blocked to him, for having performed the Unmaking, if he could kill all the Sidhe who powered the blockade from him, he would be able to enter, and he could get agents, operatives and soldiers in.

It did not take very long for a powerful entity such as Xaron to raise an army. However, he did not raise a normal army. It was far easier to raise an army of corpses, to grab and bend/break minds and twist them to his purposes, to make automatons to invade Kerri. Some humans joined the cause, seeing an easy way to invade the rich dwarven strongholds if the alliance between dwarves and elves could be sundered and the passages into dwarven kingdoms from within Kerri could be accessed. Some humans looked on in horror and objected to Xaron and his armies as they bore down on Kerri in single-minded haste, leaving a trail of wreckage in their wake. Humans sympathetic to the elvish cause were swept aside or dominated and added to the vast armies.
