Xaron attacked Kerri from the North, and then sent an army sweeping to the South. While the majority of the Sidhe who had erected the barrier were in the North, the defenses were weaker in the South, so there was a good possibility he could get into Kerri from the South if he weakened the Sidhe presence in the North enough that he could get through the barriers. Every Sidhe that died in war weakened the barrier that kept Xaron out, especially if they were one of the people who contributed to maintaining it. Xaron would use magic to possess beings in his army and test the defenses of Kerri.

The queen's champion and Sidhe warriors protected the North of Kerri, but there was no similar army to the South. Nightwind and Lupei became the heads of the militia of elves that formed in the South, and Drendel sent her sister Amethyst to the South as her personal representative there. Nightwind fought guerrilla style in the South, mostly sleeping during the day and awake at night, while in the North, there were well-executed military battles and defenses going on under the queen's watchful eye. The odd dreams continued so Drendel was able to keep an eye over the activities in the South through Nightwind's eyes, and Nightwind was always apprised of the news to the North through Drendel's. Meanwhile, Amethyst's presence gave official sanction to Nightwind's activities in the South, and Amethyst was an able-bodied young Sidhe warrior, helping to strengthen the ranks of the militia.
